I got to pay a visit to Mayberry, a place I have wanted to see for sometime. Mount Airy North Carolina or Mayberry as I and thousands of other people think of it is a great place to visit. Mount Airy is a short distance off of US 74 and was well worth my time. Like me lots of you grew up watching the Andy Griffith show. Mount Airy was Andy’s hometown and was what Mayberry was modeled after.
As I looked down Main Street I saw several names on the building which brought back memories of the show.
I remembered Andy mentioned Snappy Lunch in one of the early episodes.
All of us remember Floyd’s Barber Shop. I don’t know the facts but I would guess that for film time Floyd’s would be third to Andy’s home and the court house.
As I walked down the street I was happy to see Andy’s police car siting there.
I had to get a closer look at the car. The car I found is one of two in Mount Airy which give tours of the town.
We decided to get something to eat. Snappy’s was closed so we went to Walker’s Dinner. I did not get to try Snappy Lunch so I can’t say how it would have been but I don’t think you could be disappointed in Walker’s.
We had hamburgers and fries which were great. The collection of photos from the show and the actors were all around the dinner and was fun to look at. I would say the best thing at Walker’s was the people. Both the employees and the customers were friendly. We talked to both groups as they included us in their conversations. It was a true Mayberry moment. I bought a tee shirt which summed up our visit to Mayberry. It says “Mayberry America’s Hometown”.
