Captain John’s Seafood House

A sad note: Captain John’s is now closed.

Captain John’s Seafood House at Calabash North Carolina was a must stop for us.  After eating at the Boundary House Restaurant, we wanted to return to Calabash for more seafood.  We were told by friends to try Captain John’s. The restaurant is very nice and has lots of seating, but they also have a deck outside which is very nice with some great views. Seating is more limited on deck, but it is worth asking for.

Captain John’s starts you out with their hushpuppies and butter.  Their hushpuppies are longer and thinner than most, but the taste is great.

The menu at Captain John’s Seafood House is simpler than most.  Instead of a list of every possible combination, they have you build your own platter. Getting what you want the way you want it.

I chose a two-item platter made up of fried flounder and fried clam strips.

Fish and Clam Strips

I really liked the fish, but the clam strips were really great. My wife had a three-item platter, with broiled fish, boiled shrimp and fries’ oysters.

Captain John’s Seafood House is a really nice place to eat when visiting Calabash, North Carolina. They have the taste of Calabash seafood, and the people are friendly and very helpful in making your selection.

Dead Dog Saloon Murrell’s Inlet

Dead Dog Saloon at Murrell’s Inlet is a good place to eat.  The restaurant is located on the Marsh Walk and provides good food but the entertainment alone is worth the trip. The staff has always been great every time I visit.

The idea is a bit different but after you think about it for a while it’s a good idea. People can bring pictures of their pet dogs that have passed and post them on the walls.

Dead Dogs

A very different idea but when all is said a very good one.  When we sat down we were given a basket of hush puppies and some butter. They were great. We really enjoyed them while looking over the menu.

As a starter we selected the Grab Dip.  It came to us hot and steamy with Chips and Garlic Bread. On a cool November night this was a great start to the meal.

Crab Dip

For the entrees the Dead Dog Saloon has a wide selection to choose from.  I went for one of my standards, Fish and Chips.  The fish was hot and flakey just as I like it. Encased in a crisp beer batter and accompanied by fries, it made a great meal.

My wife ordered the Steam Pot, which comes with two clusters of Alaskan Snow Crab Legs, seasoned with Maryland crab seasoning.  Along with the crab you get corn on the cob, Kielbasa and finally red potatoes.

After the meal we walked along the marsh walk for a while enjoying the view of the inlet and the different music coming from different restaurants. At last we found ourselves back at the Dead Dog Saloon. In short we found a table on the deck, and sat down to enjoy the rest of our evening at the Dead Dog with their great music.
